Who Gets Divorced in America?

Everyone has heard the divorce statistic that 50% of marriage end in divorce. That is certainly not the case these days. In fact, the divorce rate in the US has been steadily (but slowly) declining since the early 1980s. If current trends hold, the divorce rate could soon be at 33%. However, the divorce rate for some groups is much higher.

Researchers analyzed the number of times a person gets married or divorced over their lifetime. Obviously, you can't get divorced unless you've also been married, so the researchers considered the number of times a person had been married or divorced more than once over the course of their life. The results varied bases on gender, education, and ethnicity.

The Results:

- High school or less (all ethnic groups): 39% of men, 37% of women have been married or divorced more than once. - Bachelor's degree (all ethnic groups): 28% of men, 29% of women - White (all education levels): 36% of men, 38% of women - Black (all education levels): 42% of men, 42% of women - Hispanic (all education levels): 27% of men, 30% of women - Asian (all education levels): 16% of men, 18% of women - Native American (all education levels): 44% of men, 45% of women
